If you had a wish list for the features you would want in a game, chances are most of them would be found in Impossible Mission. It was and is one of the best C64 games ever conceived. This classic game revolves around the mad Professor Elvin Atombender, who is intent on world domination. Your mission is to enter his lair and save the day. To thwart you from making too much progress, are Elvin's evil robots, which can chase and zap you along the way. The rooms are well designed and furnished with office equipment, including computer terminals, which you can use to control moveable platforms and temporarily disable the robots. Although there is no music, this is one occasion, where it isn't required. There are suitably eerie sound effects and digitised speech, like "Destroy Him My Robots!" - That sets the atmosphere for the duration of the game. The game play can be tough and it will take some time to visit the rooms and solve the puzzle, but its entertaining, and ultimately rewarding - with about the best end game sequence, on a C64 game you will ever see, that even includes some additional speech in a feminine voice.

Walkthrough - Introduction

Ever wondered why there is no map for Impossible Mission? Simple. The game was programmed to generate your starting position, the rooms, robots and placement of the puzzle pieces at the beginning of each game, using about 8-10 set patterns. Pure genius! So its virtually impossible (no pun intended!) to map the game. However, although the rooms and puzzle pieces may be in different places, the actual room design and contents are the same. This walkthrough covers the 31 different rooms that feature in the game, with step by step instructions on how to best tackle each room.
To move around Evil Elvin's complex, you will need to use the corridors and elevators, which are connected to the rooms. In the rooms you can access lift platforms to move to a level, so you can search any furnishings in the room, e.g. drink machines, chairs and typewriters. The elevator or corridor is also the only place you can call headquarters for help and access your pocket computer. You will need to do this at some stage, to try and solve the puzzle. There are nine parts to the puzzle, which each contain 4 jigsaw pieces. When you have obtained the 36 pieces, you can attempt to crack each part, by putting the jigsaw pieces together. Once all parts are completed, you will end up with 9 letters which spell a word, which is randomly selected from about 8 different 9 letter words, one of which is the word SWORDFISH. This is the password required to enter the blue rectangle door in one of the rooms to confront and destroy Elvin. Now, you did remember to keep a note of where that room was, didn't you? Impossible Mission by Epyx	In each room is a computer terminal which you can use to help you successfully sweep a room. During your room search for the puzzle pieces, you will also come across some SNOOZE and LIFT passwords. These passwords can be used by accessing the computer terminal to reset the yellow lifts or send the robots to sleep. This can be very useful for rooms which contain a lot of objects to search and any agressive robots. However, you will need to use these passwords sparingly, because there is not a lot of them available, and as you progress, you will come across some increasingly difficult rooms, that almost certainly, will require one of these passwords to complete. The SNOOZE password will only temporarily disable the robots, so don't waste any time, move as quickly as possible around the room, search the most awkward objects first.
In its day this was one of the most difficult C64 games released, with the advent of the C64 emulator, this game can now be completed, by anybody. Using the QuickLoad and QuickSave freeze feature of CCS64, it should be relatively easy to complete. It will still take time and effort, but its worth it, to see the puzzle solved and the final end sequence with Elvin Atombender! This is a terrific game, that has aged extremely well, and in recent times, updated versions have appeared on other computer or console machines. It also has one of the best uses of software speech synthesis by the company Electronic Speech Systems (ESS), with the possible exception of the game Ghostbusters. Enjoy!

Walkthrough - Part 1

This room seems quite straightforward until you realise that the furniture you need to search are all located on the bottom level and guarded usually by an aggressive robot! Fortunately, there is a computer terminal strategically located in just the right place, for you to use a SNOOZE to put that robot temporarily out of action. Move to the far right of the screen, jump over the robot, use the lift to move down to the level below, then move left, jumping over the robot, and use the lift on the far left to move down to the level below, quickly jump to the left and fall on the ledge, then jump down to the bottom level and access the computer terminal. Use one of your SNOOZE passwords and start searching the furnishings. Use the same route backwards to get back up to the top platform and exit either to the left or right of the screen.

If the robots in this room are aggressive or use motion sensors, you will have to use a SNOOZE, there is simply no way to get to the bookcases without getting zapped. If the robots in the middle of the screen don't have motion sensors, then you may be able to do it without a SNOOZE, but it will still be difficult. Move to the left, jump up to the level above, jump right to the level above, jump the robot, jump right and up to the bookcase and start searching, jump left and up to the level above and then jump right and up to search the bed and lamp, then jump left and up to search the drawers, then finally jump left and up to search the bookcase.

If you have entered the room from the right then use the following: Move right to the lift platform, move up to the level above (be mindful of the robot patrolling here), move left to the lift platform, move up to the level above. Move right to start searching the desk and candy machine, but watch out for that robot, if he reacts agressively, then you may need to use a SNOOZE, but hopefully that won't be necessary. When you have finished searching, use the far right lift platform to move up to the upper level and exit to the right. If you have entered the room from the left then use the following: Move left and fall down to the level below (be mindful of the robot patrolling here), move left and search the candy machine and desk. If you want to exit the room the way you entered, then move right to the lift platform and move up and right to exit. Otherwise, move left, avoiding the robot and fall off to the level below and then move right and fall down to the lift platform below and quickly move left to the exit.

Yes, this screen is as bad as it looks - nightmarish springs to mind! This is a very difficult room, because there are robots patrolling all three levels and there is a lot of furniture to search, also if the robots are in a trigger happy mood then you will get fried continually! No doubt about it, you will have to use at least one SNOOZE, perhaps even more. Make sure you leave some SNOOZE's for this room, otherwise you will be in serious trouble. Jump the gaps in the floor to reach the computer terminal, use a SNOOZE and as soon as you log off, quickly start walking to the right towards the lift platform, you will find that instead of falling down you will make it to the lift. If not, try again, it may take a few goes to get this right. I would practice this a bit, before using the snooze, as you don't want to waste any valuable time. Move up twice and then jump right to search the 3 storage machines, jump left (from about the middle of the two big storage machines) to reach the ledge above, then move right to the very edge of the ledge, then jump left backwards to reach the left ledge above. Move to the right edge of the ledge and jump right to reach the upper ledge. Jump right to search the big computer. Now depending on how quick you were, the SNOOZE is probably wore off or about to, so you will need to get back down to the computer terminal and then use the same 'log off and walk' method as earlier, to reach the lift platform. Move up once and jump right to search the desk and chair. Now jump left to the lift platform and then jump right to the level above, then jump left to the ledge, move right to the very edge of the ledge, then jump left backwards to reach the left ledge above, jump left and search the candy machine. Move to the right edge and jump right to the ledge just opposite, now fall down right to the lift platform. Move the lift platform to the bottom and exit to the left or right of the screen by jumping the gaps in the floor. NOTE: You can search the candy machine earlier, but in doing so you will waste valuable time which would be better spent trying to search furniture that is guarded by a robot, that snooze won't last long. You may also need to use more than one SNOOZE depending on how quick and skillful you are.

Move to the right and fall down one of the gaps in the floor to the level below. Move to the left and fall down again to the level below, jump the robot and search the desk and chair, jump back and forth to do this. Move to the far left and fall down. You need to search the big computer and the 3 typewriters. The patrolling robot will give you a lot of grief, you should be able to do this, without using a SNOOZE, but if you have to then there is a convenient placed computer terminal just before the furniture. Move to and use the lift platforms to get back up to the upper level and exit to the left.

At first glance, this room seems relatively innocuous, it does not have that much furniture, but thats until you realise there is a super-fast orb to chase you around all over the place and with so many ledges to navigate, you will almost certainly be smashed. You will have to use the computer terminal and set a SNOOZE. Fall off the left ledge and then fall down to search the 3 big tape machines on the level below. Jump up left to the ledge above, then move left and walk off the ledge to the ledge below, now walk left and fall off to the bottom left ledge and search the typewriter. Now use which ever route is quickest and safest to get back up to the computer terminal and exit right. NOTE: You can also use the lift platform at the top left of the screen to move down to the bottom of the screen and search the typewriter.

As soon as you enter this room, beware of the patrolling robot, get ready to jump right. Then move right to search the candy machine, watch out for the robot. Move to the right lift platform and move up. Move to the left and search the big tape machines. Again, keep an eye on the robot. Move to the left lift platform and move up and right to search the big computer, jumping back and forth to avoid the robot. Then move right and search the small machine, continue right to the lift platform and move to the upper level. Then search the desk and chair, again avoiding the robot. DO NOT use a SNOOZE in this room - it will just be wasted, this is one of the easier rooms.

If you have entered the room from the right then use the following: Jump over the robot, move to the far right and fall down to the lift platform, move left and search the bookcase, jumping back and forth to avoid the robot. Move to the far left lift platform and move down, move right and search the bookcase and chair, jump back and forth to avoid the robot. Move to the far left lift platform and move down to the bottom level. Move right and search the bookcase, watch out for the robot. Now you can either move to the far right and exit or backtrack and exit at the top left of the screen. If you have entered the room from the left then use the following: Avoid the robot, move to the far left and search the bookcase. Move to the far right lift platform and move up to the level above. Move left to search the chair and bookcase. Now you will have a problem, if the lift platform on the far left is not available to move up, the lift platform on the right can not move up another level. Therefore your only option is to move to the far right lift platform and move down to the bottom level and exit. You will need to access this room from the right, which means you will need to use another room to cross to an elevator on the opposite side of the complex, to enter this room from the right!

If you have entered the room from the right then use the following: In this room you have a slow moving Orb to deal with, but thanks to that friendly robot on the level below, you can easily remove it. Move right and fall down to the level below, timing is crucial here, time it just right and the orb will follow you down, and that friendly robot will be there to clash with the Orb - which will remove it. Move right and avoid the robot, to search the bed. Move to the far left lift platform and move down, move left to search the drawers, but watch out for the robot!, move right and fall down to the bottom level and move to the far left to search the candy machine, whilst avoiding that pesky robot. To exit, either backtrack and exit at the top left or just move to the far right lift platform and jump to the computer terminal and exit to the right. If you have entered the room from the left and the lift platforms are in there original positions you will not be able to reach the upper level. So the best thing to do is to enter this room from the right, just use another room to cross to the other side and then re-enter this room from the right.

Whether you have entered this room from the left or right, just move on to the far left lift platform. Move up to the upper level, jump over the robot to the lift platform on the right, jump right to the level above and search the bed. Move to the left and jump back to the lift platform. Move down to the level below, move to the very edge of the lift platform and then jump right to search the drawers. The fireplace is more awkward, depending on how the robot reacts. If he has a motion sensor then your toast and you will need to use a SNOOZE. Otherwise, move to the left edge and either fall off carefully or jump from a few paces back to fall down to search the fireplace, avoiding the robot. Fall down to the lower level from the left or right and then exit to the left or right.

Walkthrough - Part 2

Whether you have entered this room from the left or right, just move to the far left lift platform. This room is a lot harder than it appears, the robots on the above levels are a real pain. Timing is crucial, otherwise it will all go horribly wrong! Also, if the robots are aggressive you will probably need to use a SNOOZE. You need to move the lift platform up to the level above and then jump over the robot, then move right to the lift platform and move up, don't get to close to that robot though, jump over the robot and move right to the lift platform and move up to the level above, move left to search the big computer. The robot will move closer to you, jump over the robot and move left to jump left to search the typewriter. Jump right over the robots head and move right to the lift platform, move up and search the tape machine. Move left and use the lift platform to move down to the lower level and exit to the left or right.

Take a good look at this screen, because that small machine on the bottom left, is impossible to search if the robot is in a zappy mood, also the tape machine on the right could be problem, but you have a bit more space to play with. You may need to use a SNOOZE, if so you can always use the computer terminal conveniently placed by the big computer on the lower level. Whether you have entered this room from the left or right move to the middle lift platform, move down and move left to search the typewriter and desk. Move to the far right lift platform and move down to the level below, watch out for the robot and search the tape machine. Jump left over the robot and move left, jumping over the robot to the lift platform on the far left and move down to search the small machine, but watch that robot (as mentioned above you may need a SNOOZE for this), move right to the lift platform, move up to the level above, jump over the robot and move right to the 3rd lift platform, move down to the lower level and move right to search the big computer. Move left to the lift platform and move up to the level above, move to the lift platform on the far right, jumping over the robot and move up to the level above, move left, jumping over the robot, to the lift platform and move up to the upper level. Exit to the left or right.

Observe the Orb, because it will follow you around. There are no pesky robots to worry about, but you need to search the furniture in a certain order. DO NOT waste a SNOOZE on this room, it's easy. Move to the lift platform in the middle of the upper level, move down very fast to the lower level, move left and search the bath. Move quickly to the right and search the toilet. Keep an eye on that Orb. Move to the lift platform and move up and then right to search the cabinet, run left to the lift platform, move up quickly to the upper level, the orb will follow you and eventually be underneath the lift platform, now the Orb is toast. Move the lift platform down twice and the orb will be stuck on the lower level! Move left and search the drawers, move right to the lift platform and move straight up to the upper level, move left to the exit on the left.

If you have entered the room from the right then use the following: On entering the room you will fall down to the lift platform below, move up, move left to the lift platform, move to the left edge, jump left to search the typewriter, fall off to the right, move to the far right lift platform, move to the very edge and jump right to search the typewriter on the lower level, move to the left edge and jump left to the lift platform, move up, move left and fall down the gap to the lift platform below and exit to the left. If you have entered the room from the left then use the following: Move right to the lift platform and move up, move right to the middle lift platform, move down and move to the edge of the far right lift platform, jump right to search the typewriter, move left to edge and jump left to lift platform, move to left middle lift platform, move up, move right to lift platform and move up, move to very right edge and jump right to otherside, move to lift platform, move up, move to far left lift platform, move to left edge, and jump left to typewriter on lower level, fall off right, and move left to lift platform, move down and move left to exit.

This is one of the easier rooms, avoid the holes in the floor in front of you and fall off to the level below the computer terminal, to search the big and small computer, jump over the robot and fall down to the lift platform below. Search the two small machines, move to the left edge and then jump left to search the typewriter, but the robot won't make it easy! Fall off the left edge and move up on one of the available lift platforms, depending on whether you want to exit the upper level left or right, choose the appropriate lift platform.

Nothing to search in this room, but you will need to cross to the otherside, and avoid the Orb, this is actually quite easy. If you have entered the room from the left then use the following: Move left to edge and jump left to level opposite, move right to edge and jump left to lower level, move to left edge and jump left to reach upper level, exit to left. If you have entered the room from the right then use the following: Move to right edge and jump down to level below, move to very left edge of level, jump right to upper level, move right to very edge of level and jump right to reach otherside and exit to right.

If you have entered the room from the left then use the following: move left to edge of level, jump left to lift platform, move left, avoiding the robot, search stereo system, move right to edge of lift platform, jump right to otherside, move right to lift platform, move down, move right to search speaker, move left, jump over robot and search lamp and chair, fall down left to level below, fall down left to lower level lift platform, move up to upper level, move right, avoiding robot, search speaker, move left to lift platform. If you want to exit from the bottom left then move down to lower level and move left to exit. If you want to exit at top right, move right, and jump over robot, move right to edge of lift platform, jump right to otherside, and then move right to exit. If you have entered the room from the right then use the following: move right to lift platform, move up to upper level, move right, avoiding robot to search speaker, move right, jumping over robot to search stereo system, move right to edge of lift platform, jump right to otherside, move right to lift platform, move down, move right, avoiding robot, to search speaker, move left and jump over robot, to search lamp and chair. If you want to exit from the top right, then move right, jump over robot, move right to lift platform, move up and move right to exit. If you want to exit from the bottom left, then move left and fall down, move left and fall down to lift platform, move left and exit. NOTE: Try to avoid using any SNOOZE or LIFT RESETS, this room is much easier than it appears, as long as you search the furniture in a certain order. If you have difficulty with a motion sensing robot patrolling the upper left level, then use the lift platform to your advantage, if you move up or down, then the robot will move away from you, use this method to search the speaker or stereo system.

This room is easy - move left quickly (watch out for slow moving Orb) to the lift platform, move up twice, the Orb will now be stuck beneath you, move right and search desk and typewriter, move quickly right to lift platform, move up and move left (do this quickly to stop the Orb from following you up), search the computer and the 3 tape machines, move left and fall down to lift platform, move quickly right to gap and fall down to lower level and exit.

Walkthrough - Part 3

Easy-peasy, move left, jump left to otherside, move left a few paces from edge, then jump right to fall down on to level below to search typewriter, move right and fall down to lift platform on lower level, move left, jump gap, jump over robot and move left to search desk, move left to lift platform, move up to level above and move right to search big computer, move left to lift platform, move up, move right and search tape machine, jump back and forth to avoid robot, move left to lift platform, move up, move right to edge and jump right to otherside and exit right.

This room is very easy, even easier if you enter the room from the left! Because of the position of the Orb as soon as you enter from the left the Orb smashes into the robot! If you have entered the room from the left then use the following: Move left and jump left to the first 2nd platform, move up and right to search the desk, move left to the 2nd lift platform and move up and move far right to search the refridgerator, move left to lift platform, move up and move right to search sink, move left to edge of level, if you want to exit left then jump left to over the gaps towards the lift platform on the far left and exit. If you want to exit the lower right, then just backtrack using the lift platforms. If you have entered the room from the right then use the following: Move right to the very edge of the level and jump right over the two gaps to reach the middle level, move to the right edge, and jump right to search the sink, (keep an eye on the Orb, but chances are it will smash into a robot - its very easy to avoid), fall down left and move right to search the refridgerator, move left past the lift platform and fall down the gap, move right and search the desk. If you want to exit at the lower right then just move left to the lift platform, move down and exit to the right. If you want to exit the upper left, then move to the 3rd lift platform on the left, be careful of the robot and move straight up to the upper level, jump left towards the far left lift platform and exit.

Timing is of the essence - this is difficult! and you will have to use a SNOOZE. Move to the left edge, observe the robot below, you will notice that he is moving frantically from right to left, as soon as the robot starts moving from the right edge of the level to move left, fall down left and start running as fast as possible, as soon as you reach the pink chair at the desk, and the robot is coming towards you, quickly jump left over the robot and you should fall down past the top left lift platform to the 2nd level, quickly fall down through the gap on the right and move right to search the sofa, move left to the computer terminal and use a SNOOZE. Run right as fast as you can and search the chair, move right to the lift platform, move up, move left (as quick as you can) and search the bookcase, move left again, and search the other bookcase, fall down left to the lift platform and move up to the 3rd level, where the desk is. Jump left up to the top left lift platform and wait. Observe that frantically moving robot again, when the robot is near the right side, jump down right and search the desk, jump left back up to the top left lift platform. Move to the right edge of the lift platform, jump right to the level above, the robot will speed towards you, jump over the robot, and move to the right edge of the level, jump right to the upper level and exit right.

This room looks difficult, and most of the time it is! All depends on which robots are patrolling the levels, are they friendly or zappy, if some of them don't have lasers, then you need to be careful, not to run into them, but its quite straightforward, if they do have lasers you will be zapped to oblivion - so you will need to use a SNOOZE via the computer terminal at the top, to freeze the robots temporarily. Move right and fall down to the lift platform below, quickly search both machines on the left and right, use the lift platform on the right to move down to the level below, quickly search the machine on the left and then the right, move back to the lift platform on the left and move down to the lower level, quick search the machine on the left, then the one in the middle and finally the one on the right, jump back to the lift platform on the left and then move up twice to just below the top level, jump right and search the machine, then move right and use the lift platform to move down to the last machine, search it, and then move right and jump to the ledge, jump left to reach the upper level. Exit the way you came in.

Whether you entered this room from the left or right, move to the middle lift platform, move up to the level above, jump to the left, avoid the robot, move to the left lift platform, move up and move to the very right edge of the platform, jump right to the middle level where the robot is, you should just be able to reach the edge, move to the right, jump over the robot, move to the very right edge and jump right to the lift platform on the far right, move up and move left to search the chair and fireplace, jumping back and forth over the robot. Move to the left lift platform and move down, jump right and make sure you fall down through the 2nd gap to the lower level, you can now exit on the left or right.

Move up on the lift platform, jump over the robot, move to the middle or thereabouts of the level and jump right to the middle level, be careful of the robot on right, jump right the level opposite, avoiding the robot, move to the right lift platform, move up and move left to search the bookcase and the desk, jump over the robot, move to the left platform, move up and jump right over the first two gaps, and then move to the very right edge and jump right over the two gaps to just catch the edge of the level before the last gap, jump right to search the chair. Fall down left and then move left, jump over the robot and fall down to the lift platform below, jump over the robot, and fall off right to the lower level, move left, jump over the gap and exit left.

Move right to the far right lift platform, avoid the robot and search the desk, move left to middle lift platform, move up twice, and jump left to where the lift platform is, move up and right to search the small machine, jump right to the level just below and move right to the edge of the lift platform, jump right to the level where the robot is, jump over the robot and search the tape machine, move left and fall down to the level below, fall down again to the level below and jump right to search the big computer, move to the right lift platform, move down, move left and jump over the robot, move left and fall down to the lower level, exit to the left.

Move to the middle lift platform, move down, move to the left lift platform, move down, move right, jump over robot, move to the right lift platform and move down, avoid the robot, move right and search the toilet, move left, jump over the robot, search the cabinet, move to the far left, search the bath, move right to lift platform, move up, jump over robot, move to right lift platform, move up, move to left middle lift platform, move up and exit to the right. DO NOT waste a SNOOZE in this room - it really isn't that difficult.

Quite straightforward, move left to middle lift platform, move up, move left to far left lift platform, move up, move right and jump over robot, move to far right lift platform, move up, move left and search candy machine, move left to lift platform, jump over robot, jump back and forth to far left lift platform to avoid robot and search refridgerator and sink, move left to lift platform, move down, move right and jump over robot, move to middle lift platform, move down, move right, jump over robot, move right to lift platform, move down, exit right.

In this room is a giant screen that displays a black and white chequered board, attached to a small computer terminal. The game is like a C64 computer version of the old Simon Says game - remember that four squared red, green, blue and yellow machine that you may of played when a young kid in the late 1970's. It used a series of coloured squares, playing a musical note, while lighting up a coloured square, and you needed to match what the computer played! Every time you matched the computer, it became progressively harder, as another square and musical note, would be added. The game in this room, plays essentially the same. But instead of the coloured square, it's an X that appears in a square on the grid and its about the pitch of the sound, which you need to match. If you match the computer, you can get additional passwords for a SNOOZE or LIFT INIT. Its enjoyable for a few short moments, but it just wastes time, have a go, but don't spend too long playing - move on to the next room.

Take note of where this room is in the complex, the blue rectangled door at the bottom left of the screen is your your final destination, when all the puzzle pieces have been collected and solved. This door leads to Professor Elvin's lair and it is here, where you will enter to confront and ultimately destroy Elvin. The easiest way to reach the blue door is to use the lift platform at the top left of the screen and move down to the level below then jump off left, to the lift platform below and move down to the bottom level, move right and you will be outside the blue door. If you still need to find a few pieces of the puzzle then you will need to search the two items on the way down and make your way back to the elevator corridors, and complete the puzzle, then re-enter to confront Elvin.
